Top 10 Movies of 2018

2018 has been a good year for movies. We may not have seen exceptional movies this year like previous years but we did see some superb movies releasing this year. With the awards season almost complete, here's a list of top 10 movies of 2018. This list is based on what I think to be the best movies of the year. Please feel free to comment on what you thought were the best movies this year.

1. Mission: Impossible - Fallout
Mission Impossible Fallout is the best movie in the Mission Impossible series and also is one of the best action movies you will ever see. In this movie, Ethan Hunt and his IMF team, along with some familiar allies, race against time after a mission gone wrong. The story is similar to the usual Mi movies story and has nothing new to offer. But what makes this movie superb is its execution. Its a race against time thriller and keeps you on your toes throughout and also has a lot of twists to keep you engaged. What works for the movie are its superb and jaw dropping action sequences. Considering the fact that all of the action/stunts have been performed by Tom Cruise himself, makes the movie even more enjoyable. Tom Cruise is 56, so when you watch him dangle from a helicopter, leap across rooftops, hang off a cliff, and basically do things other younger adults wouldn't think of doing in their lifetime, you are just left stunned and admiring the man and his commitment for the MI films. Tom cruise once again brings insane amount of energy to this film and you just can't remain without cheering for the man. Overall Mission Impossible Fallout is a superb movie that is definitely a bang for your buck. Don't miss this one.

Genre:- Action, Adventure, Thriller.
Director:- Christopher McQuarrie.
Stars:- Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson.
Bore Meter:- No chance of getting bored. Thrilling from start to end.
My Rating:-

2. Searching
Searching is one of the most unique thrillers you will ever see. In this movie, after his 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a desperate father breaks into her laptop to look for clues to find her. Not only is this movie a very good mystery thriller but also is very different in its execution.  The film is shown entirely on screens – computers, mobile phones, television, CCTV cameras, hidden cameras etc, and still the movie manages to keep you engaged throughout. The suspense is intense throughout and you feel for the single parent David Kim played by John Cho as he unravels one mystery after another. Overall, Searching is a superb mystery thriller and should be lauded for its unique execution. This movie is a must watch.

Genre:- Mystery, Thriller.
Director:- Aneesh Chaganty.
Stars:- John Cho, Debra Messing.
Bore Meter:- No chance of getting bored. Keeps you engaged from start to end. Unique Execution.
My Rating:

3. A Quiet Place
A Quiet Place is one of the best movies I have seen this year and also one of the best Horror movies I have seen in quite a few years. In this movie, in a post-apocalyptic world, a family is forced to live in silence while hiding from monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing. What works for the movie is the amazing direction by John Krasinski. The movie keeps you engaged and in the edge of your seat throughout. Last movie I remember watching with such tension was Steven Speilberg's Jaws. I remember getting tensed on hearing the slightest sound after watching this movie. Such was the immersive experience in this movie. Also what works for the movie are its characters. All actors have done a wonderful job and make sure you feel all the emotions they feel. Overall, A Quiet Place is a superb movie and after a long time has a horror movie been this good. Don't miss this.

Genre:- Drama, Horror, Thriller.
Director:- John Krasinski.
Stars:- Emily Blunt, John Krasinski.
Oscar Buzz:-
Nominated for 1 Oscar (Best Achievement in Sound Editing).
Bore Meter:- One of the best horrors in recent years. No chance of getting bored.
My Rating:-

4. Avengers: Infinity War
Avengers Infinity War is the grand culmination of a majority of marvel movies explored across 18 movies over the last 10 years. In this movie, The Avengers and their allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe. This is the movie Marvel Fans had been waiting for the past so many years now, and I am happy to say that it doesn't disappoint. Considering the fact that this is one of the most ambitious superhero movie ever made with countless superheros, the directors Anthony Russo, Joe Russo did a fabulous job of giving decent screen time to all these superheros and not compromising on the movie. The biggest star of the movie, with the most screen time is of course Thanos and he turns out to be pretty good. Overall, Avengers: Infinity War has all the characteristics of a blockbuster movie and can be best enjoyed with a big tub of popcorn. Watch it for the entertainment value that it provides.

Genre:- Action, Adventure.
Director:- Anthony Russo, Joe Russo.
Stars:- Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Zoe Saldana, Elizabeth Olsen, Josh Brolin, Chris Pratt.
Oscar Buzz:-
Nominated for 1 Oscar (Best Achievement in Visual Effects).
Bore Meter:- Thoroughly entertaining blockbuster. No chance of getting bored.

5. The Favourite
The Favourite is a very well made historical movie. In this movie, in early 18th century England, a frail Queen Anne occupies the throne and her close friend, Lady Sarah, governs the country in her stead. When a new servant, Abigail, arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. What works for the movie is literally everything. Movie has a very simple story, but from the music, to production design, to costumes, direction, cast, everything is brilliant in this movie. Movie is directed very well and has a nice charm to it. Performances by all 3 leading actresses, Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz is really good and all of them deserve their Oscar Nomination. Overall, The Favourite is a very good charming movie that is definitely worth your time.

6. Ready Player One
Ready Player One is another very well made Sci-Fi movie by Steven Speilberg. In this movie, when the creator of a virtual reality world called the OASIS dies, he releases a video in which he challenges all OASIS users to find his Easter Egg, which will give the finder his fortune. What works for the movie is the engaging world the movie creates. The concept of OASIS is pretty good and Speilberg manages to tell an adventure story around it really well. The movie is similar to a treasure hint film and takes you on a very good and enjoyable ride. Overall, Ready Player One is a very good enjoyable cinematic experience that is definitely a very good watch.

Genre:- Adventure, Sci-Fi.

7. Green Book
Green Book is a very good movie based on a true story. In this movie, a working-class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South. The movie is a little slow in pace and story gets a bit repetitive as the main characters go from one venue to the next, but you will be duly rewarded if you show some patience. The bond between Tony Lip played by Viggo Mortensen and Dr.Don Shirley played by Mahershala Ali is shown beautifully. Both Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali have played their characters superbly and both deserve their Oscar Nominations for their performances. Overall, Green Book is a very good movie and has a wonderful message of following the path of righteousness no matter how bad the situation is.

Genre:- Biography, Drama, Music.
Director:- Peter Farrelly.

Bore Meter:- Little slow in pace but you will be duly rewarded if you show some patience.
My Rating:-

8. Vice
Vice is a very good movie based on the life of Dick Cheney, who has been cited as the most powerful vice president in American history. This movie shows Dick Cheney's story, an unassuming bureaucratic Washington insider, who quietly wielded immense power as Vice President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways that we still feel today. What works for the movie is its script. The script is written in a way that keeps you engaged. There's a lot of dark comedy in there and also unexpected moments. You are watching the movie, and midway end credits start rolling and you are like, is the movie over? Is this it?, and movie continues from there. Also performance of Christian Bale as Dick Cheney is worth mentioning. He has given a good performance. Overall, Vice is a very good movie that keeps you engaged.

Genre:- Biography, Comedy, Drama.
Director:- Adam McKay.
Stars:- Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Steve Carell.

Bore Meter:- Won't get bored. Has engaging script.
My Rating:-

9. Incredibles 2
Increbiles 2 is a sequel to the superb 2004 movie The Incredibles. In this movie, the Incredibles hero family takes on a new mission, which involves a change in family roles: Bob Parr (Mr Incredible) must manage the house while his wife Helen (Elastigirl) goes out to save the world.Incredibles 2 may not be as good as the first movie The Incredibles (2004), but is still very good fun movie. This is one of those movies that can be watched with whole family, and movie is fun from start to end. This movie may not be a breakthrough animation movie like Finding Nemo, How to Train your Dragon etc but it still is good fun and much better than many animation movies we see today. Do watch it for pure fun.

Genre:- Animation.
Director:- Brad Bird.
Oscar Buzz:-
Nominated for 1 Oscar (Best Animated Feature Film).
Bore Meter:- No chance of getting bored. Fun from start to end.
My Rating:-

10. Bohemian Rhapsody
Bohemian Rhapsody is a very good biography film. This movie shows the story of the legendary rock band Queen and lead singer Freddie Mercury, leading up to their famous performance at Live Aid (1985). This movie is a celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury. The biggest plus point of the movie is the superb performance by its lead actor Rami Malek, who plays Freddie Mercury really well. He not only displays the flamboyance and the showmanship of Freddie Mercury accurately but also captures Freddie’s loneliness and his pain very effectively. Direction of the movie is also good. You don't need to be a Queen fan to watch this movie, even the non fans can watch this movie and like it. Overall, Bohemian Rhapsody is a very good film that is a good watch mainly for Rami Malek's performance.

Genre:- Biography, Drama, Music.
