Top 10 Movies of 2017 (My Picks)

2017 has been a decent year for movies. We may not have seen exceptional movies this year like previous years but we did see some really good movies releasing this year. With the awards season almost complete, here's a list of top 10 movies of 2017. This list is based on what I think to be the best movies of the year. Please feel free to comment on what you thought were the best movies this year.

1. The Post
The Post is the best movie I have seen this year. In this movie, a cover-up that spanned four U.S. Presidents pushed the country's first female newspaper publisher and a hard-driving editor to join an unprecedented battle between the press and the government. What works for the movie is the direction by Steven Speilberg. Speilberg manages to keep the atmosphere tense throughout. The drama of what the press goes through when they get a big story is beautifully shown. Also what works for the movie are its performances. Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep do a really good job and their camaraderie works wonders. Overall, The Post is a superb movie which is a tribute to fearless journalism. Its a superb watch.

Genre:- Drama, History, Thriller.
Director:- Steven Spielberg.
Stars:- Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks.

Oscar Buzz:-
Nominated for 2 Oscars (
Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role).
Bore Meter:- Won't get bored. Has good pace.
My Rating:-

2. Get Out
Get Out is one of the best movies I have seen this year. Its one of the best horror thriller movie made in a few years. In this movie, it's time for a young African American to meet with his white girlfriend's parents for a weekend in their secluded estate in the woods, but before long, the friendly and polite ambience give way to a nightmare. The movie mainly works due to its unique story and excellent direction by debutante director Jordan Peele. Also the lead actor Daniel Kaluuya does a good job. Overall, Get Out is a very good movie and one of the freshest horror movies released in the last few years. This is definitely a must watch.

Genre:- Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Director:- Jordan Peele.
Stars:- Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams.

Oscar Buzz:-
Nominated for 4 Oscars (Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, Best Achievement in Directing, Best Original Screenplay).
Bore Meter:- Very scary and very engaging. No chance of getting bored.
My Rating:-

3. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Spider-Man: Homecoming is another well made movie from the Marvel Universe. In this movie, Peter Parker balances his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens with his superhero alter-ego Spider-Man, and finds himself on the trail of a new menace prowling the skies of New York City. Spiderman has been one of the most popular superheros we have had and we have already had countless movies on this superhero over the past 10-15 years. The biggest challenge the makers must have faced was how to tell the same story again without getting the audiences bored. They handled this very cleverly by focusing more on the human side of Spiderman. Showing him as a normal teenager juggling between Spiderman and Peter Parker and showing his struggles in a comic way, the makers succeeded in engaging the audience really well. The script is really good and humorous and pace of the movie keeps you engaged. Only downside to the movie was its villain, who doesn't really make that much of an impact. Overall, Spider-Man: Homecoming is very good movie which you will thoroughly enjoy.

Genre:- Action, Adventure.
Director:- Jon Watts.
Stars:- Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr., Laura Harrier.
Bore Meter:- Very good pace and engaging throughout. Won't get bored.
My Rating:-

4. Thor: Ragnarok
Thor: Ragnarok is without doubt the most entertaining movie of the year. In this movie,
Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok, the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization, at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. Thor: Ragnarok is 2 hrs of non-stop fun. The movie has a nice comic feel to it throughout. Chris Hemsworth is in top notch form playing Thor. All the actors seem to be enjoying themselves which comes of well on screen. Overall, Thor: Ragnarok is a very good movie and is full of entertainment. Do not miss this.

Genre:- Action, Adventure.
Director:- Taika Waititi.

Stars:- Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson, Mark Ruffalo.
Bore Meter:- Very engaging and total fun throughout. No chance of getting bored.
My Rating:-

5. Beauty and the Beast
Beauty and the Beast is an adaptation of the fairy tale about a monstrous-looking prince and a young woman who fall in love. In this movie, a young prince, imprisoned in the form of a beast, can be freed only by true love. What may be his only opportunity arrives when he meets Belle, the only human girl to ever visit the castle since it was enchanted. What works for the movie is its storytelling. The movie has a wonderful charm to it. Excellent visuals and wonderfully presented musicals add more to the charm and keep you engaged and smiling throughout the movie. Overall, this is a very well made charming romantic movie and is a very good watch.

Genre:- Fantasy, Musical, Romance
Director:- Bill Condon.
Stars:- Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans.

Oscar Buzz:-
Nominated for 2 Oscars (Best Achievement in Costume Design, Best Achievement in Production Design)
Bore Meter:- Very charming movie and engaging visuals:). Won't get bored:).

My Rating:-

6. Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman is probably the first female-fronted superhero blockbuster. In this movie, when a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, Diana, an Amazonian warrior in training, leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny. Over the past few years, Marvel has surpassed DC not only with quality of their superhero movies, but also in terms of box office. Whatever else Marvel may have done right, its handling of female characters has been a sore spot for a while. But DC not only took a gamble, but also executed it really well which led to Wonder Woman becoming a blockbuster. What works for the movie is its direction.Very well directed by Patty Jenkins, she manages to give the audience a number of really good goosebumps moments, where you just cheer for the leading character. This is also mainly possible because of superb performance and screen presence of its leading actress, Gal Gadot. Her portayal of Wonder Woman is really good and its her sincere performance that takes the movie to a different level. Overall, Wonder Woman is a very good movie and is a must watch for all who have been waiting for a female-fronted superhero movie.

Genre:- Action, Adventure,War.
Director:- Patty Jenkins.
Stars:- Gal Gadot, Chris Pine.
Bore Meter:- Very good pace and engaging throughout. No chance of getting bored.
My Rating:-

7. War for the Planet of the Apes
War for the Planet of the Apes is the 3rd installment in the Planet of the Apes trilogy following 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes and 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. In this movie, after the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. What works for the movie is its direction. The director Matt Reeves does an amazing job of giving a nice dark tone to the movie. Along with the thrills, the movie is also compelling in terms of its drama. What also works for the movie are its performances. Almost all the actors do a really good job, especially Andy Serkis as Caesar. Andy Serkis just owns the character of Caesar, making the character feel very real. It’s a deeply affecting performance and is rich in emotion. The actor somehow manages to portray the animal with a multitude of feelings and gives the character a very distinct personality. Overall, War for the Planet of the Apes is a very well made dramatic thriller that is definitely worth your time.

Genre:- Action, Adventure, Drama, Thriller.
Director:- Matt Reeves.
Stars:- Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson.

Oscar Buzz:-
Nominated for 1 Oscar (Best Achievement in Visual Effects).
Bore Meter:- Very engaging movie. Won't get bored.
My Rating:-

8. Dunkirk
Dunkirk is a very well made war movie. In this movie, allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire and France are surrounded by the German Army, and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II. Dunkirk is a very good film if considered individually, but does fall short when you consider that it's a Christopher Nolan film. Its probably the weakest Christopher Nolan film when compared with masterpieces like Inception, The Dark Knight, The Prestige. One of the main reasons for this has to be the script, considering the fact that there are not much dialogues in Dunkirk. Nolan movies are known primarily for their really brilliant scripts and dialogues. The strong points of the movie are its excellent cinematography, camera work and brilliant background score. This movie is a visual spectacle and best enjoyed in IMAX. Overall, Dunkirk is a very good film and is a pretty good watch.

Genre:- Action, History, Thriller, War.
Director:- Christopher Nolan.
Oscar Buzz:-
Nominated for 8 Oscars (Best Achievement in Film Editing, Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Score), Best Achievement in Sound Editing, Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Achievement in Directing, Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, Best Achievement in Production Design).
Bore Meter:- Visual Spectacle. Won't get bored.
My Rating:-

9. Darkest Hour
Darkest Hour is a very good film based on World War 2 times. In this movie, during the early days of World War II, the fate of Western Europe hangs on the newly-appointed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who must decide whether to negotiate with Adolf Hitler, or fight on against incredible odds. What works for the movie is its good direction. The movie sticks to simple story telling which really works for it. The strongest point of the movie is the performance by its lead actor, Gary Oldman, who plays Winston Churchill. Its without a doubt one of the strongest performances of the year and Gary Oldman may win Best Actor Oscar this year. Overall, Darkest Hour is a very good film and is a really good watch.

Genre:- Drama, History, War.
Director:- Joe Wright.
Stars:- Gary Oldman.

10. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is a very well made dark comic drama and also one of the front runners to win Best Picture Oscar this year. In this movie, a mother personally challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter's murder when they fail to catch the culprit. What works for the movie is its realistic storytelling. It is not your typical murder mystery or whodunit movie. Also working for this movie are top notch performances by its lead actors. Frances McDormand,Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell give brilliant performances and help in taking the movie to a whole new level. Overall,
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is a very good movie and is a pretty good watch if you like realistic film making.
