Top 10 Movies of 2014 (My Picks)

2014 has been a great year for movies:). We saw some really good movies releasing this year. With the awards season already begun and Oscars coming this week, here's a list of top 10 movies of 2014. This list is based on what i think to be the best movies of the year. Please feel free to comment on what you thought were the best movies this year:).

1. Interstellar
Interstellar is the best film I have seen in 2014.Though not as brilliant as Nolan's other films like Inception and The Dark Knight, Interstellar is still a superb film:).Here, a team of explorers travel through a wormhole in an attempt to ensure humanity's survival. The movie mainly focuses on two key areas. One is the space adventure where our explorers need to travel through a wormhole to save humanity and other is the emotional drama between our movie's lead protagonist and his daughter.Nolan shows both these areas beautifully and manages to keep the audience engaged throughout the film. One of the main features of the film is its spectacular visual effects:). This is one of the few movies for which IMAX screens are actually made. After watching this movie in IMAX, you will feel as if you were on a space ride:). Simply incredible:). Also background score by Hans Zimmer is pretty good.Another thing that works for the movie is its cast. Matthew McConaughey is simply superb as Cooper and is the heart of the film. Also Jessica Chastain shines in her role:). The third act of the film, similar to other Nolan movies, is pretty complex and may need another watch to fully understand.Overall Interstellar is a superb film and a must watch in iMax:).

The movie is paced really well and manages to engage the audience throughout its length.
Also worth mentioning is the outstanding performance by J.K Simmons. He is simply brilliant and his performance will give you goosebumps:).Not sure whether everyone will like the ending of the movie. But if you think about it,it's better to end early than drag the movie and end too late.Overall Whiplash is a superb movie and definitely a great watch:).

Gone Girl is superbly made dark thriller:).In this movie, With his wife's disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man sees the spotlight turned on him when it's suspected that he may not be innocent. What works for the movie is its solid direction. The movie has a nice dark feel to it.Also what stands out in the film are its performances, especially by Rosamund Pike, who is outstanding as Amy Dunne. 4. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of best entertainers you will see this year:). It's the second movie in the Captain America franchise. Its more of a political thriller than a superhero movie:). In this movie, Captain America struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and battles a new threat from old history: the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier. To be really honest, i wasn't a huge fan of Captain America, he is my least favorite superhero, so i really didn't have much expectations from this movie. But this movie turned out to be a superb blockbuster and entertainer:):):). This movie proved to me that no matter how dull the superhero may be, at the end of the day its the script that counts:). With a fantastic script and good direction, this movie makes sure you are involved and in edge of your seat throughout the movie:). Also performance by Chis Evans as Captain America is really good:). This movie is based on the adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous hotel from the fictional Republic of Zubrowka between the first and second World Wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The movie mainly works because it has a lovely and irresistable charm to it:).The film is like a roller coaster ride, and you will have a smile on your face thoughout the film:).One performance worth mentioning is that of Ralph Fiennes, he lights up every scene he is in:).His performance and likeability is so good in this film that in scenes which don't feature him, you are just waiting for his next appearance:). 6. Boyhood
Boyhood is a very well made movie that connects with you:). The movies shows the life of a young man, Mason, from age 5 to age 18.
What's spectacular about the movie is that it took 11 years to make it. Unlike our bollywood films, where a kid suddenly grows into our hero(full grown man), here the director has waited patiently for 11 years and shot with the same actors who were once kids and by end of the movie grow into adults. The movie is really good because it doesn't feel like a movie. It feels as if you are watching somebody's life which is being shown in front of you. Such is the brilliance of the direction.Overall, Boyhood is a very good movie and definitely a very good watch:).

Genre:- Drama.
Director:- Richard Linklater.
Stars:- Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke.
Oscar Buzz:- Will be updated once Oscars are announced.
Bore Meter:- Doesn't feel like watching a movie:).It's like watching somebody's life. Won't get bored if you like different movies:).

7. The Imitation Game
The Imitation Game is a very well directed historic film:). Here, during World War II, mathematician Alan Turing tries to crack the enigma code with help from fellow mathematicians. What works for the film is the direction. The way the story has been told is very engaging. Also, performance by lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch is top notch:).The movie smoothly switches between Alan turing's discovery and his personal life. Overall, The Imitation Game is a very good movie. This is one biography that is definitely a must watch:).

Stars:- Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley.
Oscar Buzz:- Will be updated once Oscars are announced.
Bore Meter:- Really engaging throughout:). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

8. Nightcrawler
Nightcrawler is a very well made dark thriller:). In this movie, when Lou Bloom, a driven man desperate for work, muscles into the world of L.A. crime journalism, he blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story. Aiding him in his effort is Nina, a TV-news veteran. One of the main strength of the movie is the performance of its lead actor Jake Gylenhaal:).He pulls off the creepiness of his character Louis Bloom superbly:). He is the heart of the film. Very difficult to understand why he didn't get an Oscar nod for Best Actor. Also the movie is directed very well with a dark feel to it:).Overall, Nightcrawler is a very good movie and definitely a very good watch:).

Genre:- Drama, Thriller.
Director:- Dan Gilroy.

9. Guardians of the Galaxy
Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the most entertaining movies you will see this year:). In this movie, a group of intergalactic criminals are forced to work together to stop a fanatical warrior from taking control of the universe.
The main reason this movie works is because of its fun element. This is a typical eg of how a blockbuster should be made. Funny charming and also some great action sequences, what else do you need in an entertainer:).Chris Pratt as Peter Quill(StarLord) is so fun that you will become a fan of his after watching this movie:).Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy is a must watch if you like entertainers and want to have some fun:).

Bore Meter:- Superb Entertainer:). No chance of getting bored:).
My Rating:-

10. Edge of Tomorrow
Edge of Tomorrow is a good movie with a really good plot line:). Here, an officer (Tom Cruise) finds himself caught in a time loop in a war with an alien race. His skills increase as he faces the same brutal combat scenarios, and his union with a Special Forces warrior gets him closer and closer to defeating the enemy. This movie mainly works because of its unique story:). The concept of Live, Die,Repeat is really good and really well shot as well:). Even though the main character experiences the same events again and again, the director makes sure that the viewers don't get bored, by using different camera angles, adding humour to the script and also some great editing. Even though you witness the same events, you start feeling for the character and there is a lot of humour in the movie to keep you engaged in the first half:). Also Tom Cruise does a good job and brings a lot of energy to the movie:). The second half slightly slows down by including a romantic angle and also slightly dull climatic ending. But overall, its a good and fun movie to watch:).
