Movies by Year:- The 60's

The 60's was the decade of groundbreaking films. This decade saw many path-breaking movies, which have inspired and still continue to inspire movies of the current era.So here's bringing to you some of the movies of the 60's that i enjoyed:).

Psycho (1960)
One of the best horror-thrillers ever made,Psycho is definitely a masterpiece:). Here, a young woman steals $40,000 from her employer's client, and subsequently encounters a young motel proprietor too long under the domination of his mother. This movie was a groundbreaking movie, and has helped in creating a new genre on which so many movies of current era have been made:). This movie is perfect in every aspect, right from the script, direction(Alfred Hitchcock) and great performance by the entire cast:). This is definitely a must watch:).

Genre:- Horror, Thriller.
Oscar Buzz:-
Nominated for 4 Oscars (Best Actress in a Supporting Role,Best Art Direction-Set Decoration-Black-and-White,Best Cinematography-Black-and-White,Best Director).
Bore Meter:- Won't get bored.Has good pace:).
My Rating:-

The Great Escape (1963)
The Great Escape is a superbly executed prison break movie:). Based on a true story, here, a group of allied escape artist type prisoners of war are all put in an 'escape proof' camp. Their leader decides to try to take out several hundred all at once. The first half of the film is played for comedy as the prisoners mostly outwit their jailers to dig the escape tunnel:). The second half is high adventure as they use boats and trains and planes to get out of occupied Europe:). Extremely entertaining and well directed, this movie always keeps you at the edge of your seat:).Another great movie of the 60's, this is a superb watch:).

Genre:- Adventure, War.
Oscar Buzz:-
Nominated for Oscar (Best Film Editing).
Bore Meter:- Won't get bored.Has good pace:).
My Rating:-

Rosemary's Baby (1968)
Rosemary's baby is a superbly directed horror movie:). Here, a young couple move into a new apartment, only to be surrounded by peculiar neighbors and occurrences. When the wife becomes mysteriously pregnant, paranoia over the safety of her unborn child begins controlling her life. This movie basically works because of superb direction by Roman Polanski, who makes sure you are at the edge of your seat throughout the movie:). Also the performance of the cast is worth mentioning, right from Mia Farrow to the supporting actors, all have done a good job:). If you like horror movies, and are bored of watching same type of horror movies, then this is definitely a different watch:).

Genre:- Horror, Mystery.
Oscar Buzz:-
Won Oscar (Best Actress in a Supporting Role).
1 Other Nomination (Best Writing-Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium).
Bore Meter:-Won't get bored.Has good pace:).
My Rating:-

Planet of the Apes (1968)
Planet of the Apes was yet another path-breaking movie. This movie was definitely way ahead of its time:). Here, an astronaut crew crash lands on a planet in the distant future where intelligent talking apes are the dominant species, and humans are the oppressed and enslaved. What works for it is its story, and good direction:). Planet of the Apes is definitely a good watch,as it achieves something that indian movies even after having better technology have still not been able to achieve:(.

Genre:- Adventure, Sci-Fi.
Oscar Buzz:-
Won Honorary Award (John Chambers for his outstanding make-up achievement in the movie).
2 Other Nominations (Best Costume Design,Best Music, Original Score for a Motion Picture (not a Musical)).
Bore Meter:- Won't get bored.Has good pace:).
My Rating:-

The Innocents (1961)
The Innocents is yet another beautifully directed horror movie:). Here, a young governess for two children becomes convinced that the house and grounds are haunted. This movie works mainly because of its great direction:). It keeps you engaged throughout the length of the film. This movie does have some controversial scenes and a very different and confusing ending. But still for its direction and storytelling, this is definitely a very good watch:).

Genre:-  Horror.
Bore Meter:- Won't get bored.Has good pace:).
My Rating:-

  3. Well, this is what i was waiting for. I have to watch one movie out of these, and you know which one and why i haven't watched it yet. 'Nuff said. Very good movie selection. Lot of movies to select from and you chose these five, that really stand out. Especially Psycho and The Great Escape. I'm waiting for the 70's release now and might already know half the movies you're gonna select (GF,Sting,OFOTCN). Some of these might make the cut, some might not. It's upto you now. You are the BossMan. The Countdown Begins! ;-)

    1. Also, one thing that's eating at me is you added three horror movies and no comedies? That's rough man. Should give equal importance to all genres. "Dr. Strangelove" comes to mind when i think of 60's comedy. One of Peter Sellers better comedies. Don't be partial to horror movies dude (not everybody likes them) :P
