Movies worth watching in 2017 (Part 2)

This post is a continuation of my earlier blog post (Movies worth watching in 2017:-
). Here are some more 2017 movies I have seen and feel are worth watching this year:).

Spider-Man: Homecoming:-
Spider-Man: Homecoming is another well made movie from the Marvel Universe. In this movie, Peter Parker balances his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens with his superhero alter-ego Spider-Man, and finds himself on the trail of a new menace prowling the skies of New York City. Spiderman has been one of the most popular superheros we have had and we have already had countless movies on this superhero over the past 10-15 years. The biggest challenge the makers must have faced was how to tell the same story again without getting the audiences bored. They handled this very cleverly by focusing more on the human side of Spiderman. Showing him as a normal teenager juggling between Spiderman and Peter Parker and showing his struggles in a comic way, the makers succeeded in engaging the audience really well. The script is really good and humorous and pace of the movie keeps you engaged. Only downside to the movie was its villain, who doesn't really make that much of an impact. Overall, Spider-Man: Homecoming is very good movie which you will thoroughly enjoy.

Genre:- Action, Adventure.
Director:- Jon Watts.
Stars:- Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr., Laura Harrier.
Bore Meter:- Very good pace and engaging throughout. Won't get bored.
My Rating:-

Wonder Woman:-
Wonder Woman is probably the first female-fronted superhero blockbuster. In this movie, when a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, Diana, an Amazonian warrior in training, leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny. Over the past few years, Marvel has surpassed DC not only with quality of their superhero movies, but also in terms of box office. Whatever else Marvel may have done right, its handling of female characters has been a sore spot for a while. But DC not only took a gamble, but also executed it really well which led to Wonder Woman becoming a blockbuster. What works for the movie is its direction.Very well directed by Patty Jenkins, she manages to give the audience a number of really good goosebumps moments, where you just cheer for the leading character. This is also mainly possible because of superb performance and screen presence of its leading actress, Gal Gadot. Her portayal of Wonder Woman is really good and its her sincere performance that takes the movie to a different level. Overall, Wonder Woman is a very good movie and is a must watch for all who have been waiting for a female-fronted superhero movie.

Genre:- Action, Adventure,War.
Director:- Patty Jenkins.
Stars:- Gal Gadot, Chris Pine.
Bore Meter:- Very good pace and engaging throughout. No chance of getting bored.
My Rating:-

War for the Planet of the Apes:-
War for the Planet of the Apes is the 3rd installment in the Planet of the Apes trilogy following 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes and 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. In this movie, after the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. What works for the movie is its direction. The director Matt Reeves does an amazing job of giving a nice dark tone to the movie. Along with the thrills, the movie is also compelling in terms of its drama. What also works for the movie are its performances. Almost all the actors do a really good job, especially Andy Serkis as Caesar. Andy Serkis just owns the character of Caesar, making the character feel very real. It’s a deeply affecting performance and is rich in emotion. The actor somehow manages to portray the animal with a multitude of feelings and gives the character a very distinct personality. Overall, War for the Planet of the Apes is a very well made dramatic thriller that is definitely worth your time.

Genre:- Action, Adventure, Drama, Thriller.
Director:- Matt Reeves.
Stars:- Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson.
Bore Meter:- Very engaging movie. Won't get bored.
My Rating:-

Wind River:-
Wind River is a very well made chilling murder mystery thriller. In this movie, a veteran tracker with the Fish and Wildlife Service helps to investigate the murder of a young Native American woman, and uses the case as a means of seeking redemption for an earlier act of irresponsibility which ended in tragedy. What works for the movie is its brilliant direction and cinematography. The amazing direction gives the movie a very realistic feel. The visuals are just brilliant. Each and every scene has been brilliantly captured. Also the script and performances are really good, which make you feel for the characters shown and they all feel very real. Overall, Wind River is a very well made mystery thriller that is a very good watch for its direction, visuals and performances.

Genre:- Drama, Mystery, Thriller.
Director:- Taylor Sheridan.
Stars:- Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen.
Bore Meter:- Very realistic and thrilling movie. Won't get bored.
My Rating:-

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales:-
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is the 5th installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. In this movie, Captain Jack Sparrow searches for the trident of Poseidon while being pursued by an undead sea captain and his crew. What works for the movie is its good pace and really good visuals. Its just a good one time fun watch especially in 3d. The movie is entertaining throughout and manages to keep the audience engaged. Overall, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is a good one time entertaining watch.

Genre:- Action, Adventure.
Director:- Joachim Rønning, Espen Sandberg.
Stars:- Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Geoffrey Rush, Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario.
Bore Meter:- Good entertaining film. Won't get bored.

Movies worth watching in 2017

2017 has turned out to be a excellent year for Hollywood:). This year we did see some huge blockbusters like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Transformers: The Last Knight, Wonder Woman, War for the Planet of the Apes, Spider-Man: Homecoming etc. With still half a year left,  2017 still has blockbusters to come like the new Justice League movie and the next Star Wars film:). This is my first post on 2017 movies I liked,I will keep on adding new posts as and when I watch some good 2017 movies:). Lets begin with some 2017 movies I have seen and feel are worth watching this year:).

Get Out:-
Get Out is till now the best movie I have seen so far this year:). Its one of the best horror thriller movie made in a few years. In this movie, it's time for a young African American to meet with his white girlfriend's parents for a weekend in their secluded estate in the woods, but before long, the friendly and polite ambience give way to a nightmare. The movie mainly works due to its unique story and excellent direction by debutante director Jordan Peele:). Also the lead actor Daniel Kaluuya does a good job. Overall, Get Out is a very good movie and one of the freshest horror movies released in the last few years. This is a must watch:).

Genre:- Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Director:- Jordan Peele.
Stars:- Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams.
Bore Meter:- Very scary and very engaging:). No chance of getting bored:).
My Rating:-

Beauty and the Beast:-
Beauty and the Beast is an adaptation of the fairy tale about a monstrous-looking prince and a young woman who fall in love. In this movie, a young prince, imprisoned in the form of a beast, can be freed only by true love. What may be his only opportunity arrives when he meets Belle, the only human girl to ever visit the castle since it was enchanted. What works for the movie is its storytelling. The movie has a wonderful charm to it:). Excellent visuals and wonderfully presented musicals add more to the charm and keep you engaged and smiling throughout the movie. Overall, this a very well made charming romantic movie that is a very good watch:).

Genre:- Fantasy, Musical, Romance
Director:- Bill Condon.
Stars:- Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans.
Bore Meter:- Very charming movie and engaging visuals:). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

Logan is another movie on the X-Men mutant hero Wolverine and probably the only Wolverine movie I actually enjoyed:). In this movie, in the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X, somewhere on the Mexican border. However, Logan's attempts to hide from the world, and his legacy, are upended when a young mutant arrives, pursued by dark forces. What works for the movie is its well written script and direction. This movie is not easy on the eyes as it maintains a dark theme and has many brutal and violent scenes. But this is also a reason why it stands out from other Wolverine movies, as it feels very real. We can see and feel the struggle Logan faces in each and every scene in the movie. A lot of credit goes to Hugh Jackman also for his amazing and real performance. Overall, Logan is a very good movie that may be dark and difficult to watch but also feels very real:).

Genre:- Action, Drama
Director:- James Mangold.
Stars:- Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen
Bore Meter:- Dark, violent and has decent pace:). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

Kong: Skull Island:-
Kong Skull Island is a good popcorn entertainer:). In this movie, a team of scientists explore an uncharted island in the Pacific, venturing into the domain of the mighty Kong, and must fight to escape a primal Eden. What works for this movie is the entertainment value it provides and its amazing visual effects:). King Kong has been shown very well in this movie, especially fight scenes involving Kong where he performs like our WWE wrestlers are just pure joy to watch:):). Overall, Kong Skull Island may not have much going in terms of script or story, but just purely on entertainment value, this movie is a good watch:):).

Genre:- Action, Adventure.
Director:- Jordan Vogt-Roberts.
Stars:- Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson
Bore Meter:- Good entertainer:). No chance of getting bored:).
My Rating:-

Ghost in the Shell:-
Ghost in the shell is a good one time watch movie:). In this movie, in the near future, Major is the first of her kind: A human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world's most dangerous criminals. The movie has an okayish script and good visual effects. The movie works because of its good pace, where something or other keeps on happening and audience don't get a dull moment to sit and think too much on the story. Once the movie is over, it may not be that satisfying, but you feel it was a good entertaining watch. Also Scarlett Johansson does a good job as Major. Overall, Ghost in the Shell is a good one time watch movie which you can watch if you have the time:).

Genre:- Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller.
Director:- Rupert Sanders.
Stars:- Scarlett Johansson
Bore Meter:- Has good pace:). Won't get bored:).

Bollywood 2016

With 2016 coming to an end, I decided to list down some of the best Bollywood movies of 2016 I have seen. 2016 has been a good year for Bollywood:). We got to see some really good movies. What was special about this year was that all major Bollywood stars decided to do content driven films rather than meaningless masala films that we are used to seeing. Also, all of them decided to act and perform a character for a change rather than just playing the Bollywood hero. Though we have seen and expect good performances from Aamir and Srk, the biggest surprise was Salman Khan:), who actually decided to act and gave a good performance this year:).  So here's bringing to you the list of Bollywood films that i watched and felt were worth watching this year:).

Pink is the best Bollywood movie of 2016 I have seen:). In this movie, when three young women are implicated in a crime, a retired lawyer steps forward to help them clear their names. Pink is a very unique and superb film for Bollywood when compared to the usual formulaic Bollywood movies filled with song and dance numbers we are used to seeing. It has a very simple storyline but successfully delivers a very stong message towards our deep-set prejudices and outright injustice that women across India face. Everything about this movie is superb, from storytelling to direction and also amazing performances by its cast. Taapsee Pannu and the girls give a very solid performance. But the performance that stands out is that of Amitabh Bachchan:). Amitabh not only delivers with his baritone voice but also expresses superbly with his eyes. This is one of his best performances in recent times and you will definitely remember his performance long after you leave the cinema halls. Overall, Pink is a superb film which may be a little uncomfortable to watch but it is also a must watch:):):).

Genre:- Drama, Thriller.
Director:- Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury.
Stars:- Amitabh Bachchan, Tapsee Pannu.
Bore Meter:- Superb movie and good pace:). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

The very dependable Aamir Khan returned to screen after a period of 2 years and once again managed to deliver with Dangal. Dangal is a biographical sports drama on former wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his two wrestler daughters' struggle towards glory at the Commonwealth Games in the face of societal oppression. Dangal movie starts brilliantly and first half of the movie is just superb:). The movie has very good direction, all the action scenes have been brilliantly choreographed. But the main reason the movie works is due to the hardwork the girls and Aamir have put for the movie and it shows.Aamir not only changes his physique for the movie, but also gets into the skin of Mahavir Singh Phogat really well. This is definitely one of the best performances of Aamir we have seen:). What doesn't work for the movie is its slightly Bollywoodised second half, where you stop feeling you are watching a movie based on reality. From the Australian competitors being shown as cartoonish villains, to the national coach character and especially the climax seemed very unrealistic. But, inspite of these issues, Dangal is still a very good film that can be enjoyed with your whole family:).

Genre:- Action, Drama, Sport.
Director:- Nitesh Tiwari.
Stars:- Aamir Khan.
Bore Meter:- Has good pace and entertainment:). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

Airlift is a very good movie based on a real life incident. In this movie, When Iraq invades Kuwait in August, 1990, a callous Indian businessman becomes the spokesperson for more than 170,000 stranded countrymen. What mainly works for the film is its reality. The director keeps the whole film real and doesn't try to dramatize the movie too much. The movie also has a good pace and keeps you engaged with the situation in the movie throughout. Also Akshay Kumar does a very good job of underplaying his character and nowhere he comes across as a Bollywood Hero or masala actor. Overall, Airlift is a very good watch and it is more engaging as it is based on a real life incident:).

Genre:- Action, Drama, Thriller, War.
Director:- Raja Menon.
Stars:- Akshay Kumar, Nimrat Kaur.
Bore Meter:- Has decent pace. Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

Aligarh is a very touching film based on true story:). This movie is a true story of Dr. Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras, who was suspended from his job because of his sexual orientation. What I loved about the movie is its mature direction:). Nowhere it feels like that we are watching a movie, it feels as if we are watching a real person's life. The movie's direction is very poetic and is on par with Oscar nominated Hollywood movies. What also works for the movie is the performances by its central actors. Manoj Bajpayee does a great job as the Marathi professor and touches your heart with his performance. Also Rajkummar Rao does a very good job and brings a lot of energy to the movie. Overall, Aligarh is a good movie with really mature direction:).

Genre:- Drama.
Director:- Hansal Mehta.
Stars:- Manoj Bajpayee, Rajkummar Rao.
Bore Meter:- Has slow pace but is very well directed:).
My Rating:-

2016 seems to be a year of true stories for Bollywood:). Neerja is another true story of the courageous Neerja Bhanot, who sacrificed her life while protecting the lives of 359 passengers on the Pan Am flight 73 which was hijacked by a terrorist organization in 1986. Neerja is a well made film which will make you feel for the character. The movie keeps you engaged throughout and doesn't deviate too much from its central plot. Only drawback i found was that the movie tries to manipulate your emotions a little too much especially at the end. Overall, Neerja is a well depicted film which will make you feel for the central character:).

Genre:- Drama, Thriller.
Director:- Ram Madhvani.
Stars:- Sonam Kapoor.
Bore Meter:- Has good pace and very engaging:). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

Sultan was a surprisingly good film for me. I went in to watch a typical Salman Khan masala movie but ended up watching a good entertaining movie with decent script and strong characters. Sultan is a classic underdog tale about a wrestler's journey, looking for a comeback by defeating all odds. Sultan is the perfect blockbuster you want and expect from Bollywood. The movie is entertaining and has very good catchy songs. The movie has a decent script and stong characters. But what was most surprising about the film was Salman Khan's performance.Yes, you heard it right:). Salman Khan for the first time in his life has actually acted and played a character on screen rather than playing the same larger than life hero. He delivers a very convincing performance. Overall, if you are looking for a good masala entertainer, then Sultan is the film to watch:).

Genre:- Action, Romance, Sport.
Director:- Ali Abbas Zafar.
Stars:- Salman Khan, Anushka Sharma.
Bore Meter:- Total entertainment:). No chance of getting bored:).
My Rating:-

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story:-
This movie is based on the real life of the Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni. The movie shows his journey from being a ticket collector to trophy collector - the world-cup-winning captain of the Indian Cricket Team. MS Dhoni: The untold story is a good movie which shines in the first half when it shows the life of small town boy Dhoni. The movie though, gets a little deviated with some unnecessary romantic scenes in the second half. The movie is more like a calendar of events in Dhoni's life. We never get to know Dhoni's thoughts and how he thinks or feels. Also important events like CSK controversy have been conveniently neglected in the movie. Also the movie is a bit too long, crossing over 3 hrs. But what keeps the movie engaging is the performance of Sushant Singh Rajput as Ms Dhoni. He does a great job and gets the body language of Dhoni absolutely right. Overall, Ms Dhoni may not be a great biopic but still is a good watch:).

Genre:- Drama, Sport.
Director:- Neeraj Pandey.
Stars:- Sushant Singh Rajput, Disha Patani, Kiara Advani.
Bore Meter:- Good pace and engaging movie:). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil:-
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a good romantic film:). This movie explores love - the shapes it takes, the ways it changes us and the exhilarating and often terrifying ride it takes us on. It is the journey of two characters, Alizeh and Ayan, as they navigate life, love and heartbreak. This movie doesn't have a great script or really interesting story. This is one of those movies which would have been average if you take the performances and songs away. Ae dil hai mushkil mainly works due to the superb performances by its leads. Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma have excellent chemistry in the movie and give really superb performances. Also almost all songs in the movie are superb. The movie has a good first half, but a really confused second half. A star like Aishwarya rai wasn't needed in this movie as the role she plays doesn't have any weightage in the movie. Overall, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a good watch mainly due to its terrific performances:).

Genre:- Romance.
Director:- Karan Johar.
Stars:- Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai.
Bore Meter:- Excellent performances and superb songs). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

Fan is a good thriller drama:). It is constructed around an intriguing premise. Shah Rukh Khan plays a double role in the movie as the mega movie-star named Aryan Khanna, and also an obsessed fan of the star named Gaurav Chandna. Fan has a good entertaing first half. Second half is also decent but does get a little inconsistent with its narrative. What works for the film is the committed performance of Shah Rukh Khan. Fan is good deviation for Srk from his recent movies, where he gets to act after a long time. Shah Rukh Khan, especially while playing Gaurav, delivers a very convincing performance and reminds us of the young Srk from movies like Darr and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa:):). Overall, Fan is a good one time watch movie with good performance by Srk:).

Genre:- Action, Drama, Thriller.
Director:- Maneesh Sharma.
Stars:- Shah Rukh Khan.
Bore Meter:- Has good pace:). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-

Dishoom is a good one time watch entertainer:). In this movie, when India's top batsman goes missing in the Middle East, two mismatched cops must team up for a 36-hour manhunt before the cricket final. The movie mainly works because of its fast pace and great humor throughout:). Varun Dhawan steals the show with his funny lines and John Abraham is good as a tough officer of the Indian special task force. Also Akshay Kumar's cameo in the film is really funny:).Overall, Dishoom is good one time watch masala entertainer:).

Genre:- Action, Adventure, Comedy.
Director:- Rohit Dhawan.
Stars:- John Abraham, Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez.
Bore Meter:- Has great pace and entertainment:). Won't get bored:).
My Rating:-
