Top 10 Movies of 2018

2018 has been a good year for movies. We may not have seen exceptional movies this year like previous years but we did see some superb movies releasing this year. With the awards season almost complete, here's a list of top 10 movies of 2018. This list is based on what I think to be the best movies of the year. Please feel free to comment on what you thought were the best movies this year.

1. Mission: Impossible - Fallout
Mission Impossible Fallout is the best movie in the Mission Impossible series and also is one of the best action movies you will ever see. In this movie, Ethan Hunt and his IMF team, along with some familiar allies, race against time after a mission gone wrong. The story is similar to the usual Mi movies story and has nothing new to offer. But what makes this movie superb is its execution. Its a race against time thriller and keeps you on your toes throughout and also has a lot of twists to keep you engaged. What works for the movie are its superb and jaw dropping action sequences. Considering the fact that all of the action/stunts have been performed by Tom Cruise himself, makes the movie even more enjoyable. Tom Cruise is 56, so when you watch him dangle from a helicopter, leap across rooftops, hang off a cliff, and basically do things other younger adults wouldn't think of doing in their lifetime, you are just left stunned and admiring the man and his commitment for the MI films. Tom cruise once again brings insane amount of energy to this film and you just can't remain without cheering for the man. Overall Mission Impossible Fallout is a superb movie that is definitely a bang for your buck. Don't miss this one.

Genre:- Action, Adventure, Thriller.
Director:- Christopher McQuarrie.
Stars:- Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson.
Bore Meter:- No chance of getting bored. Thrilling from start to end.
My Rating:-

2. Searching
Searching is one of the most unique thrillers you will ever see. In this movie, after his 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a desperate father breaks into her laptop to look for clues to find her. Not only is this movie a very good mystery thriller but also is very different in its execution.  The film is shown entirely on screens – computers, mobile phones, television, CCTV cameras, hidden cameras etc, and still the movie manages to keep you engaged throughout. The suspense is intense throughout and you feel for the single parent David Kim played by John Cho as he unravels one mystery after another. Overall, Searching is a superb mystery thriller and should be lauded for its unique execution. This movie is a must watch.

Genre:- Mystery, Thriller.
Director:- Aneesh Chaganty.
Stars:- John Cho, Debra Messing.
Bore Meter:- No chance of getting bored. Keeps you engaged from start to end. Unique Execution.
My Rating:

3. A Quiet Place
A Quiet Place is one of the best movies I have seen this year and also one of the best Horror movies I have seen in quite a few years. In this movie, in a post-apocalyptic world, a family is forced to live in silence while hiding from monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing. What works for the movie is the amazing direction by John Krasinski. The movie keeps you engaged and in the edge of your seat throughout. Last movie I remember watching with such tension was Steven Speilberg's Jaws. I remember getting tensed on hearing the slightest sound after watching this movie. Such was the immersive experience in this movie. Also what works for the movie are its characters. All actors have done a wonderful job and make sure you feel all the emotions they feel. Overall, A Quiet Place is a superb movie and after a long time has a horror movie been this good. Don't miss this.

Genre:- Drama, Horror, Thriller.
Director:- John Krasinski.
Stars:- Emily Blunt, John Krasinski.
Oscar Buzz:-
Nominated for 1 Oscar (Best Achievement in Sound Editing).
Bore Meter:- One of the best horrors in recent years. No chance of getting bored.
My Rating:-

4. Avengers: Infinity War
Avengers Infinity War is the grand culmination of a majority of marvel movies explored across 18 movies over the last 10 years. In this movie, The Avengers and their allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe. This is the movie Marvel Fans had been waiting for the past so many years now, and I am happy to say that it doesn't disappoint. Considering the fact that this is one of the most ambitious superhero movie ever made with countless superheros, the directors Anthony Russo, Joe Russo did a fabulous job of giving decent screen time to all these superheros and not compromising on the movie. The biggest star of the movie, with the most screen time is of course Thanos and he turns out to be pretty good. Overall, Avengers: Infinity War has all the characteristics of a blockbuster movie and can be best enjoyed with a big tub of popcorn. Watch it for the entertainment value that it provides.

Genre:- Action, Adventure.
Director:- Anthony Russo, Joe Russo.
Stars:- Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Zoe Saldana, Elizabeth Olsen, Josh Brolin, Chris Pratt.

The Favourite is a very well made historical movie. In this movie, in early 18th century England, a frail Queen Anne occupies the throne and her close friend, Lady Sarah, governs the country in her stead. When a new servant, Abigail, arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. What works for the movie is literally everything. Movie has a very simple story, but from the music, to production design, to costumes, direction, cast, everything is brilliant in this movie. Movie is directed very well and has a nice charm to it. Performances by all 3 leading actresses, Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz is really good and all of them deserve their Oscar Nomination. 6. Ready Player One
Ready Player One is another very well made Sci-Fi movie by Steven Speilberg. In this movie, when the creator of a virtual reality world called the OASIS dies, he releases a video in which he challenges all OASIS users to find his Easter Egg, which will give the finder his fortune. What works for the movie is the engaging world the movie creates. The concept of OASIS is pretty good and Speilberg manages to tell an adventure story around it really well. The movie is similar to a treasure hint film and takes you on a very good and enjoyable ride. Overall, Ready Player One is a very good enjoyable cinematic experience that is definitely a very good watch.

7. Green Book
Green Book is a very good movie based on a true story. In this movie, a working-class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South. The movie is a little slow in pace and story gets a bit repetitive as the main characters go from one venue to the next, but you will be duly rewarded if you show some patience. The bond between Tony Lip played by Viggo Mortensen and Dr.Don Shirley played by Mahershala Ali is shown beautifully. Both Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali have played their characters superbly and both deserve their Oscar Nominations for their performances. Overall, Green Book is a very good movie and has a wonderful message of following the path of righteousness no matter how bad the situation is.

My Rating:-

8. Vice
Vice is a very good movie based on the life of Dick Cheney, who has been cited as the most powerful vice president in American history. This movie shows Dick Cheney's story, an unassuming bureaucratic Washington insider, who quietly wielded immense power as Vice President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways that we still feel today. What works for the movie is its script. The script is written in a way that keeps you engaged. There's a lot of dark comedy in there and also unexpected moments. You are watching the movie, and midway end credits start rolling and you are like, is the movie over? Is this it?, and movie continues from there. Also performance of Christian Bale as Dick Cheney is worth mentioning. He has given a good performance. Overall, Vice is a very good movie that keeps you engaged.

9. Incredibles 2
Increbiles 2 is a sequel to the superb 2004 movie The Incredibles. In this movie, the Incredibles hero family takes on a new mission, which involves a change in family roles: Bob Parr (Mr Incredible) must manage the house while his wife Helen (Elastigirl) goes out to save the world.Incredibles 2 may not be as good as the first movie The Incredibles (2004), but is still very good fun movie. This is one of those movies that can be watched with whole family, and movie is fun from start to end. This movie may not be a breakthrough animation movie like Finding Nemo, How to Train your Dragon etc but it still is good fun and much better than many animation movies we see today. Do watch it for pure fun.

Oscar Buzz:-
Nominated for 1 Oscar (Best Animated Feature Film).
Bore Meter:- No chance of getting bored. Fun from start to end.
My Rating:-

10. Bohemian Rhapsody
Bohemian Rhapsody is a very good biography film. This movie shows the story of the legendary rock band Queen and lead singer Freddie Mercury, leading up to their famous performance at Live Aid (1985). This movie is a celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury. The biggest plus point of the movie is the superb performance by its lead actor Rami Malek, who plays Freddie Mercury really well. He not only displays the flamboyance and the showmanship of Freddie Mercury accurately but also captures Freddie’s loneliness and his pain very effectively. Direction of the movie is also good. You don't need to be a Queen fan to watch this movie, even the non fans can watch this movie and like it. Overall, Bohemian Rhapsody is a very good film that is a good watch mainly for Rami Malek's performance.

One Room Set Movies

One Room Set Movies are movies set in one room or location. Movies that are entirely shot in one room or location or at least a major part of the movie has been shot in one location/room have been considered. Here's presenting you a list of some of the best One Room Set movies that are definitely worth your time.

Sleuth (1972)
Sleuth is one of the best movies ever made and definitely is one of the most underrated movies ever. In this movie, a man who loves games and theater invites his wife's lover to meet him, setting up a battle of wits with potentially deadly results. What is brilliant about this movie is that it has only 2 actors who are conversing with each other the whole movie. It has no action, no over the top music, no extreme special effects or crazy camera angles. But you don't really miss anything. The script is just brilliant and intelligent and keeps you on your toes always. The 2 lead actors Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine are just brilliant in their performances, their camaraderie is what takes the movie to another level. This is how a movie should be made. Nowadays we have so much technology in movies, but we haven't been able to make a movie like this. This is definitely one of the best movies ever and deserves all the credit in the world.

Genre:- Mystery, Thriller.
Director:- Joseph L. Mankiewicz
Stars:- Laurence Olivier, Michael Caine.

Nominated for 4 Oscars (Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Director, Best Music-Original Dramatic Score)

My Rating:-

12 Angry Men (1957)
This 1950's classic is undoubtedly one of the best movies ever made. I have never met a person who has seen this movie, and said he didn't like it. In this movie, the defense and the prosecution have rested and the jury is filing into the jury room to decide if a young Spanish-American is guilty or innocent of murdering his father. What begins as an open and shut case of murder soon becomes a mini-drama of each of the jurors' prejudices and preconceptions about the trial, the accused, and each other. Outstanding script, direction, and performances (especially by Henry Fonda) makes this movie one of the best movies ever made, and definitely a must watch.

Genre:- Drama.
Director:- Sidney Lumet.
Stars:- Henry Fonda, Lee J. Cobb, Martin Balsam.
Oscar Buzz:-
Nominated for 3 Oscars(Best Picture,Best Director,Best Writing Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium)
Bore Meter:- No chance of getting bored. One of the best movies ever.
My Rating:-

Room (2015)
Room is one of best movies I have seen in last 3-4 years. And it is undoubtedly one of the finest movies ever made.In this movie, after five-year old Jack and his mother escape from the enclosed surroundings that Jack has known his entire life, the boy makes a thrilling discovery. One of the main reasons as to why the movie works are its performances. Brie Larson is just fantastic in the film. She may have been only 25 when she gave this performance but she does a great job playing the role of a mother. No wonder she won Oscar and all major awards for her performance. Even the kid Jacob Tremblay does an amazing job and their chemistry together is worth watching. Also the concept of the movie is very brilliant. Direction is also very good. There were many sensitive elements in the movie and director made sure that movie was shown throughout in the right way.Overall, Room is an excellent film and a must watch for all. Absolutely brilliant.

Genre:- Drama.
Director:- Lenny Abrahamson
Stars:- Brie Larson, Jacob Tremblay

My Rating:-

Dog Day Afternoon (1975)
This movie is defintely one of the best one room set movies ever made and Al Pacino's performance in this movie is undoubtedly one of the most energetic performances you will ever see on screen. Based upon a real-life story that happened in the early seventies in which the Chase Manhattan Bank in Flatbush, Brooklyn, was held siege by a gay bank robber, this movie is a true classic.Al pacino as Sonny Wortzik, gives one of the finest performances ever witnessed on the big screen. He literally carries the entire movie on his shoulders with an electric performance and unbelievable lunatic energy. Thanks to its strong performances and a comical script, this is a must watch.

Genre:- Crime, Drama.
Director:- Sidney Lumet.
Stars:- Al Pacino, John Cazale.

Won Oscar(Best Writing, Original Screenplay)
5 Other Nominations(Best Actor in a Leading Role,Supporting Role,Best Director,Best Film Editing,Best Picture).

Dial M for Murder (1954)
This murder suspense thriller is yet another classic by Alfred Hitchcock. Here,an ex-tennis pro carries out a plot to murder his wife. When things go wrong, he improvises a brilliant plan B.What makes this movie special is its tight script(very hard to find loopholes in this movie) which is extremely well executed and directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It keeps you hooked in throughout its length,as events after events unfold and doesn't leave you disappointed in the end as well. Well scripted murder thriller, surely a must watch.

Genre:- Crime, Mystery, Thriller.
Director:- Alfred Hitchcock.
Stars:- Ray Milland, Grace Kelly, Robert Cummings.

Bollywood 2018

2018 has been a great year for Bollywood. This is the first year for the longest time where all 3 Khan movies have been rejected by audience and have become big flops. Small budget movies, instead have found success and some of them have even gone to collect more than 100 crs which is huge feat for these movies. Hence, 2018 can be called as a trend setting year and a major lesson for all the super stars to focus on script first. Here's presenting you a list of top Bollywood movies of 2018 that are definitely worth your time.

1. Andhadhun
Andhadhun is the undoubtedly the best Bollywood movie released this year. In this movie, a series of mysterious events change the life of a blind pianist who now must report a crime that was actually never witnessed by him. This is the best movie by director Sriram Raghavan who has come up with critically acclaimed movies like Johnny Gaddar, Badlapur and Ek Hasina Thi. What works for the movie is its amazing writing. The movie starts off normally where we are introduced to this blind pianist played by Ayushmann Khurrana, but then soon we are taken through one twist after another and have no clue what we are going to be hit with next. The movie keeps you engaged throughout and its a movie you can't even afford to blink for a second, lest you miss something important. Also performances by leads Ayushmann, Tabu and Radhika Apte are really good. Overall, Andhadhun is the best Bollywood movie this year and also one of the best thrillers ever made in Bollywood. Don't miss this one.

Director:- Sriram Raghavan.
Stars:- Ayushmann Khurrana, Tabu, Radhika Apte.
Bore Meter:-  Engaging from start to end. No chance of getting bored.

2. Raazi
Raazi is yet another very good movie made by Talvar director Meghna Gulzar. In this movie, a Kashmiri woman agrees to marry a Pakistani army officer in order to spy on Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. Similar to Talvar, Meghna Gulzar again keeps a very realistic tone throughout the movie. Apart from a couple of scenes, where a kid becomes a singer in a weeks time, entire movie is kept very realistic, no scenes are bollywoodized and also there is no overpatriotism which is found in Bollywood movies of similar premise. Also what makes the movie work is its cast, especially performance of Alia Bhatt. She is superb in this role and carries the whole movie on her shoulders. Overall, Raazi is a very good movie that is definitely a must watch.

Genre:- Drama, Thriller.
Director:- Meghna Gulzar.
Stars:- Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal.
Bore Meter:-  Very Engaging movie. Won't get bored.
My Rating:-

3. Stree
Stree is a good fun and a very different movie of horror comedy genre. In this movie, in the small town of Chanderi, the menfolk live in fear of an evil spirit named "Stree" who abducts men in the night. This movie is based on the urban legend of "Nale Ba" that went viral in Karnataka in the 1990s. This movie works mainly because of its unique story. This is a very different comedy horror movie and has lots of funny moments which audience will enjoy. Also what works for the movie is the superb performance by Rajkummar Rao. Rajkummar just owns the character and is very believable as Vicky. Overall, Stree is a good, fun, different movie which is definitely a must watch.

Genre:- Comedy, Horror.
Director:- Amar Kaushik.
Stars:- Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor.
Bore Meter:-  Very well made comedy horror. No chance of getting bored.
My Rating:-

4. Tumbbad
Tumbbad is again a very unique and different movie which hasn't been attempted much before in Bollywood. This movie is a mythological story about a goddess who created the entire universe. The plot revolves around the consequences when humans build a temple for her first-born. This movie mainly works because of its unique story-telling. The story is very simple yet keeps you on your toes as there are many times during the movie where one has no clue what is going on. Another feature that is brilliant in this movie is its excellent cinematography and camera work. Each and every scene is shot beautifully and complements superbly with the story. Also the performance of Sohum Shah is definitely worth mentioning. He plays the character of Vinayak really well. Overall, Tumbbad is a very unique movie that is definitely a must watch. You wouldn't have seen such a movie before in Hindi Cinema.

Genre:- Drama, Horror, Thriller.
Director:- Rahi Anil Barve, Anand Gandhi, Adesh Prasad.

5. Badhaai Ho
Badhaai Ho is a good comedy movie with an interesting plot. In this movie, a man faces embarrassment in the society when he finds out his mother is pregnant. What works for the movie is its interesting and funny plot. Also the characters in the movie are very well written. The movie is very believable as its very easy for audience to connect with these characters. Due to this, the movie is very funny as you can understand the situation that these characters are going through. Also the cast is well chosen, and their performances are worth appreciating. Only downside in this movie is its stretchy second half, the movie gets stretched a little too much in the end, and hence feels a little repetitive. Overall, Badhaai Ho is a good comedy movie which is definitely a good watch.

Genre:- Comedy, Drama.
Director:- Amit Ravindernath Sharma.
Stars:- Ayushmann Khurrana, Sanya Malhotra.
Bore Meter:-  Good funny movie. Won't get bored.
My Rating:-

6. Padmaavat
Padmaavat is another well made historic film by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. This movie is set in medieval Rajasthan, where Queen Padmavati is married to a noble king and they live in a prosperous fortress with their subjects until an ambitious Sultan hears of Padmavati's beauty and forms an obsessive love for the Queen of Mewar. This movie has all the feels of a Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie. Padmaavat is a movie made on a grand scale and has a phenomenal Production Design and really lavish sets. Music is good throughout and songs sound nice to the ear, not like the usual remakes and remixes you see in all the new Bollywood movies. All these are good, but the biggest plus point of the movie is Ranveer's Singhs performance. He is absolutely brilliant and menacing as Alauddin Khalji. He brings an insane amount of energy to the movie in each and every scene that he is present. Overall, Padmaavat is a good movie and is a good watch for its lavish set designs and brilliant performance by Ranveer Singh.

Genre:- Drama, History, Romance, War.
Director:- Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
Stars:- Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor.
Bore Meter:-  Engaging movie. Won't get bored.
My Rating:-

7. Sanju
Sanju is a biography movie of actor Sanjay Dutt. In this movie, Sanjay Dutt, an actor from the Bollywood film industry, struggles with the legacy that is handed down to him from his parents, along with his personal dilemmas and vices. This is not the best biography movie that has been made. When compared to biography movies made by Martin Scorsese, this movie is nowhere close. This movie mainly focuses on only 2 aspects of Sanjay Dutt's life, his drug life and his jail life, and hence feels incomplete as a biography movie. Also film doesn't feel objective enough, with over emotions and target of the movie seems to be to always show Sanju in a good light, that he was misguided into doing all the bad things he has done. Its not a satisfying watch. But what makes Sanju a decent watch is the outstanding performance of Ranbir Kapoor. After Barfi, Ranbir again got an opportunity to show his acting skills, and he definitely doesn't disappoint. His body language and mannerisms are just perfect, and he portrays various emotions that Sanju goes through brilliantly. Definitely one of the best performances of the year. Overall, Sanju is a decent watch mainly for Ranbir Kapoor's brilliant performance.

Genre:- Biography, Drama.
Director:- Rajkumar Hirani.
Stars:- Ranbir Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Dia Mirza, Vicky Kaushal, Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor.
